South Tower is my fifth dark ambient album produced primarily in VCV Rack. This time around, I've acquired some eurorack hardware and augmented a few tracks with a contact microphone, a CEM3340-based analog VCO, and After Later Audio Waves, a clone of the Mutable Instruments Ripples design for an analog filter.
In terms of composition, this album leans more toward fully composed original work than previous releases, though there are generative and improvised elements throughout it once again, and one Saint-Saëns arrangement for good measure. After some of the more aggressively discordant sounds on my previous album Interregnum MMXXII I've returned to a more contemplative mode, albeit retaining more percussion than on my first releases.
South Tower explores a range of moods organized around a central theme about our individual failures to process and adequately respond to collective loss and shared trauma, and particularly that of the 11 September 2001 attacks that precipitated so many war crimes justified to the public as somehow both retribution and humanitarian intervention. I hope you find something to connect to here.
Love,
D Cyprès
